Both certifications are Expert-tier and both build on an associate below them, but they diverge completely in what they are about. AZ-305 earns the Solutions Architect Expert title and is a design exam: given a business's requirements, can you choose and justify the right architecture — compute, storage, network, identity, continuity — against cost, reliability and security. AZ-400 earns the DevOps Engineer Expert title and is a delivery exam: can you build the pipeline that ships and re-ships software and infrastructure continuously and safely. Its prerequisite is the AZ-104 Azure Administrator, because you cannot design well with services you cannot operate. AZ-400: shipping the estate
AZ-400, Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions, is the delivery engineer's exam. It is about the machine that ships software and infrastructure: source control at scale, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, secure releases, and monitoring and feedback. It is scenario-heavy and assumes you have actually built and run pipelines. Its prerequisite is AZ-104 or AZ-204 — you can come to DevOps from the operations side or the developer side. Can I get both AZ-305 and AZ-400?
Yes, and some senior engineers hold both, because architecture and delivery overlap in real platform work. But for most people it is better to earn the one that matches your target role first, pair it with real projects, and only pursue the second if your career moves toward the other discipline. Collecting both Expert certs without the experience behind them does not double your value — the certificate is only as strong as the work underneath it. Do AZ-305 and AZ-400 need AZ-104?
They have slightly different prerequisites. AZ-305, the Solutions Architect Expert, requires the AZ-104 Azure Administrator associate. AZ-400, the DevOps Engineer Expert, requires either AZ-104 or AZ-204, the Azure Developer associate. So AZ-104 opens the door to both Expert paths, which is part of why it is such a common first cert, while AZ-204 opens the DevOps path specifically.
