DevOps engineer job description templates (junior, mid, senior)

A DevOps engineer job description sets out the role's mission, responsibilities, and required skills — typically Linux, Git, containers (Docker and Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (Terraform or Bicep), and a cloud platform. Requirements scale by level: a junior owns pieces of the pipeline, a senior owns the platform and its reliability.
Most DevOps postings are copied from an older posting that was itself copied from somewhere else, which is how a junior req ends up demanding eight years of Kubernetes. The templates below are written to be honest about level, so the people who answer them are the people you actually want. What a DevOps job description should contain
A good JD is short and load-bearing. Every line either helps the right person self-select in or helps the wrong person self-select out. Four parts do most of that work.
- A mission line. One sentence on why the role exists — what it is accountable for, not a list of technologies. "Keep our deploys fast and our production reliable" tells a candidate more than a wall of tool names.
- Responsibilities. Five or six things the person will actually do in a normal week. If a bullet describes a once-a-year event, cut it. Ground each one in an outcome: builds ship, environments reproduce, alerts mean something.
- Must-have versus nice-to-have skills. The single most useful split in the whole document. Must-haves are the small set a person cannot do the job without. Everything else is a wish, and it belongs under a heading that says so.
- Level and its salary. State the seniority, the rough years that match it, and a real pay range. A range that is present and honest earns more trust than a perk paragraph.
A must-have list that runs past six items is a wish list wearing a disguise.

Junior DevOps engineer JD (template)
A junior owns pieces, not the whole. The req should read like an invitation to grow, and the must-have list should be genuinely short — foundations plus the willingness to learn the rest on the job.
Mission
Support and improve our build-and-deploy pipeline so the team ships often and safely, learning the platform from the people who run it.
What you'll do
- Maintain and extend CI/CD pipelines under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Write and update infrastructure-as-code modules against patterns the team already uses.
- Package and run services in containers; help keep our images small and current.
- Investigate failed builds and noisy alerts, and document what you find.
- Automate the small manual chores that slow the team down.
Must-have
- Comfortable on the Linux command line and with Git day to day.
- One scripting language (Bash or Python) at a get-things-done level.
- Basic understanding of one cloud platform and of how containers work.
- You read error messages carefully and ask good questions.
Nice-to-have
- Any exposure to Terraform or Bicep, Docker, or a CI/CD tool.
- A foundational cloud certification or a public project we can look at.

Mid-level DevOps engineer JD (template)
The mid-level engineer works without hand-holding. They own a service or a slice of the platform end to end, and the req can ask for demonstrated production experience rather than potential.
Mission
Own and improve a meaningful part of our delivery platform, from the pipeline to the runtime, and raise the reliability of what you touch.
What you'll do
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for several services, not just tend them.
- Build reusable infrastructure-as-code modules and review others' changes to them.
- Run workloads on Kubernetes: deployments, scaling, and the incidents that follow.
- Own monitoring and alerting for your area so signals are actionable, not noise.
- Take part in the on-call rotation and help write the runbooks it depends on.
Must-have
- Solid Linux, Git, and scripting, used in a real production setting.
- Hands-on Docker and Kubernetes beyond a tutorial.
- Terraform or Bicep in anger, managing infrastructure that people rely on.
- Working depth in one cloud platform: networking, identity, and cost basics.
- A CI/CD system you have built pipelines in, start to finish.
Nice-to-have
- An associate-level cloud certification.
- Experience with a secrets manager, a service mesh, or policy-as-code.

Senior DevOps engineer JD (template)
A senior owns the platform and is accountable for its reliability. The req is less about a longer tool list and more about judgment, direction, and the trust to be the person paged when it matters.
Mission
Own the shape and reliability of our delivery platform, set the patterns other engineers build on, and make the trade-offs that keep us fast and safe as we grow.
What you'll do
- Set the architecture and standards for CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and runtime.
- Lead the design of platform changes and mentor engineers through them.
- Own reliability targets, incident response, and the review that keeps outages rare.
- Weigh cost, security, and speed and defend the calls you make to the business.
- Anchor the on-call rotation for the systems the company depends on.
Must-have
- Deep command of Linux, Git, containers, Kubernetes, and CI/CD at scale.
- Fluent infrastructure as code with Terraform or Bicep, including module design.
- Strong depth in at least one cloud platform, with networking and security judgment.
- A track record of owning production reliability and leading incident response.
- The communication to explain a trade-off to engineers and to non-engineers alike.
Nice-to-have
- Professional-level cloud certification or equivalent proof of depth.
- Experience building an internal platform or developer-facing tooling.

The clearest way to see the difference is side by side. Ownership is the axis that moves; the tools barely change. Salary figures are broad, region-dependent ranges for guidance only — set your own to the market you are hiring in.

Read those pay bands with a grain of salt: they swing hard by city, industry, and remote policy, and a strong mid-level in a high-cost market can clear a senior number elsewhere. Use them to sanity-check a posting, not to anchor a negotiation.
How candidates should read a JD
If you are answering one of these rather than writing it, the same structure is a decoder. A few habits keep you from either talking yourself out of a good role or into a bad one.
- Find the must-have list and ignore the rest first. Most postings blur required and wished-for skills together. Mentally re-sort them. The genuine must-haves are usually four or five items; the long tail is a wish list, and you do not need every item on a wish list to apply.
- Read responsibilities as the real job. The bullet points under "what you'll do" describe your actual week far better than the buzzword paragraph does. If the responsibilities excite you and the must-haves are mostly met, that is a strong signal — even if a nice-to-have or two is missing.
- Let the level tell you what to expect. A junior req that demands senior depth is a warning about the company, not a verdict on you. A senior req that only lists tools, with nothing about ownership or judgment, may be a mid-level role with an inflated title.
- Treat the range and the tone as data. A present, honest salary band and plain writing tell you something good about how the team operates. A posting that hides pay and stacks a decade of requirements onto an entry role is telling you something too.
Meet the must-haves and be genuinely interested in the responsibilities, and apply. The nice-to-have list is scenery.
